Thank you for helping behind the scenes!

Here’s what you need to know:

Communion Servers

Before service:

  • The bread tray and two juice cups are typically set out for you in the main floor kitchen. If not, you’ll find them on the rolling setup carts (these are kept in the hallway to the right of the stage). Please wash your hands before handling the bread.

  • If a ziploc bag of bread pieces has not been set out already, grab one from the freezer and spread out the pieces on the tray. If you use the last bag in the freezer, please tell Patti Kratzer!

  • Fill one juice cup with half a mini bottle of grape juice, typically found in the door of the fridge. None there? You’ll find more juice bottles in the storage room downstairs (back wall shelving unit). If you use the last bottle, please tell Patti Kratzer!

  • Carry the tray and both cups (one filled, one empty) into the Sanctuary. The heel of the loaf and the empty juice cup go on the base of the music speaker furthest from the door for Words of Institution. The filled juice cup and bread tray go on the base of the music speaker closest to the door for serving.

During service:

  • Toward the end of the Lord’s Prayer, come to the front. The person holding the bread tray stands closest to the side exit and repeats, “The body of Christ, broken for you.” The person with the juice repeats “The blood of Christ, shed for you.”

  • If someone eats their bread before dipping or tries to drink from the cup, try saying: “I’m going to have you take another piece of bread and dip it.” Folks inevitably feel embarrassed, so smile and tell them it’s no big deal, etc.

  • When everyone has gone through the line, walk over and serve whoever is at the computer (typically Patti), and then serve each other.

  • Return the tray and cup to the base of the music speaker.

After service:

  • On your way out of the Sanctuary, grab the broken bread heel, the tray, and both cups.

  • Toss the heel and any remaining bread pieces in a green Organics bin. Pour out the juice.

  • Wash the cup and tray and return them to one of the wheeled carts. You’ll find the carts either in the Sanctuary or in the hallway to the right of the stage. The tear-down team will wheel the carts back down to the storage room.

THANK YOU!

Greeters

Before service, set up the Greeter Booth (between 4:30-4:40pm):

  • In our storage room downstairs, look for the plant, lamp, and attached extension cord on top of the filing cabinet.

  • Look for two shoebox-sized clear plastic bins typically on the kids’ check-in table. Not there? Check for them on the rolling setup carts int he hallway to the right of the stage. You’ll need a few of the “I’m New Here” cards, a few Values + Benediction cards, a couple pens, and some stickers. No pens? Borrow some from Bethlehem’s info booth.

  • Wheel the booth from the room just off the Sanctuary to the front entrance. Center the booth in front of the blue wall.

  • Arrange the lamp, plant, cards and pens on top of the booth.

  • The lamp’s extension cord can be plugged into the outlet on either side of the elevator. Don’t forget to turn on the lamp!

As people begin to arrive (about 4:45pm; remember, visitors come early!):

  • Position yourselves with a greeter or two near the booth and one over by the Sanctuary side entrance.

  • Greet folks by name if possible. If it’s a friend and they want to chat, kindly move them along: tell them you’ll catch them after service, ask them to save you a seat inside, etc.

  • If they’re visiting, welcome them warmly, ask how they heard about us, introduce them to a fellow greeter or staff, etc. You can offer them one of the “I’m New Here” cards (they can return it to the booth on their way out or hand it to a staff member), also the Values + Benediction card or stickers if they’re into it. If they have kids, walk them over to the staff sitting at the kids’ check-in table.

  • Come join worship during the second song or when people stop trickling in.

  • Before you go inside, designate a “Goodbyer” - one greeter who returns to the entrance at the end of the service to say goodbye to folks as they leave, answer questions (or refer to a staff member), etc.

During worship:

  • Keep an eye out for any of the new visitors you met. Try to greet them if possible or introduce them to someone else in the community.

After worship:

  • The “Goodbyer” should position themselves near the front doors. Visitors tend to leave right away, so it’s nice to have one more touchpoint: “Thanks for coming!” “Have a great week!” If they linger, they might have questions or want to talk to a staff member - you can offer to make that connection.

  • Tear down the greeter booth: return cards to their storage box, the lamp/plant to the file cabinet. Wheel the booth back into the room off the Sanctuary, centered under the light switches.

THANK YOU!
